Anxiety Anxiety is a general feeling of apprehension about possible danger. With anxiety, however, it can be difficult to specify clearly what is the danger. There are several types of anxiety disorders, including Panic Disorder, Phobias, Agoraphobia, Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD), Post-Traumatic Disorder (PTSD), and Generalized Anxiety Disorder. Children may also suffer from Separation Anxiety Disorder. This means they avoid social settings due to concerns about being separated from their caretaker when it is not developmentally appropriate. Many of these disorders include the patient complaining of panic attacks. Many people are confused about what a panic attack is. A panic attack is a period of intense fear or discomfort that peaks within ten minutes. Some symptoms panic attacks can bring on are: pounding heart, sweating, trembling, difficulty breathing, chest pains, nausea, feeling detached from reality or oneself, fear of dying or losing control, hot flashes or chills, numbing or dizziness. As a therapist and counselor, I can help you understand what triggers your anxiety and how to manage it. Some people experience success in therapy by utilizing self relaxation techniques, such as imagery and controlled breathing. It also can be helpful in therapy to identify your thoughts associated with your anxiety and challenge irrational beliefs. These concepts are key to experiencing symptom relief. It is important to understand anxiety can be diminished, and even eliminated, by learning new skills.
